CITY AND SCHOOL
Mont Pèlerin, in the canton of Vaud above Vevey, became the founding place of the Mont Pèlerin Society from 1 to 10 April 1947. Here Friedrich August von Hayek brought together 39 economists, philosophers and historians from ten countries.
Mont Pèlerin is a ridge 1,080 metres high on the Swiss Plateau, rising above Vevey and Lake Geneva to the north of the vineyards of Chardonne. The hamlet of Le Mont-Pèlerin belongs to the municipality of Chardonne in the canton of Vaud; a funicular from Vevey, opened in 1900, had turned the mountain into a plateau of hotels from the Belle Époque onward. Here, on 1 April 1947, Friedrich August von Hayek opened the founding meeting of the Mont Pèlerin Society at the Hôtel du Parc, the Pelerin Palace built in 1906. He had been preparing the conference since 1945 together with Wilhelm Röpke and the Zurich industrialists' secretary Albert Hunold. For ten days, 39 scholars from ten countries, among them Ludwig von Mises, Karl Popper, Milton Friedman, George Stigler, Lionel Robbins, Frank Knight, Walter Eucken, Maurice Allais and Wilhelm Röpke, debated the defence of the open society against collectivism and central planning. The opening address was given by the Swiss host William Rappard, director of the Geneva IHEID, who had already brought Mises to Geneva in 1934. From this meeting grew the most influential think tank of post-war liberalism.
