BIOGRAPHY

Life and Work

Coming from Poppitz near Znaim (today Znojmo) in present-day Moravia, Mahr completed his studies in German studies, Scandinavian studies and history in Vienna in 1921 with a Dr. phil., and in 1925 additionally took a doctorate as Dr. rer. pol. He then received a three-year fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation and was able to gain his habilitation in 1930, shortly after his return. As a student of Mayer, Mahr, who in his early works on the theory of prices, interest and money and on monetary policy showed himself critical of Böhm-Bawerk, Mises and Hayek, nonetheless remained an outsider. He was one of the few representatives of the Austrian School who took part neither in the Mises private seminar nor in the Geistkreis. After 1938 Mahr stayed in Austria and earned his living at the Central Statistical Office until he succeeded to Mayer's chair in 1950. After the war, as a "convinced representative of the basic idea of the Austrian or Viennese School", Mahr sought to reach a compromise with mathematical economics and the Keynesian paradigm.
